Travel Guide to Medan for Our Wedding
Flight Routes/Information:
Primary Airport: Book your flight into Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Recommended Route: Consider a layover in Singapore before heading to Medan. Direct flights from Singapore to Medan are frequent and convenient.
Alternative Route: You can also find cheaper international flights into Jakarta, then book a domestic flight to Medan. Daily flights are available between Jakarta and Medan.
Tips for Your Visit:
Duration: For an immersive experience, plan to stay in Medan for at least 3 days. Arriving a day or two prior to the wedding date and staying at least a day after after ensures a relaxed and immersive trip. We also recommend stopping by Singapore for couple days to check out the futuristic Southeast Asia city and amazing culinary.
Local Guidance: Shen and I will be around during this timeframe to hang out and show you the best of Medan.

Before the Event: Prior to October 6th, we will be staying in Medan.
Post-Event Travel: After our time in Medan, we plan to travel to Bali on October 6th. Let’s chat if you want to join us for an extended adventure.
Transportation from the Airport:
Taxi Services: Upon arrival at Kualanamu International Airport, numerous taxis are available. The average cost from the airport to the city center is around 400,000 IDR ($22 USD).
Airport ATMs and Cash: There are many ATMs at the airport. It’s advisable to withdraw cash for convenience. For reference, 1,000,000 IDR is about $60 USD.
Local Transport Apps: GoJek, the Indonesian version of Uber, is highly recommended for getting around the city.
Travel Accommodation: Let us know when you are expecting to arrive and we are happy to provide travel accommodation from the airport to your hotel.

In Medan:
1. Tjong A Fie Mansion:
Located in the heart of Medan, Tjong A Fie Mansion is a beautifully preserved historical house museum built in 1895. It showcases Medan’s rich multicultural heritage and the life of Tjong A Fie, a prominent Hakka merchant. From most central locations, it’s only about a 15-20 minute drive. As you explore, consider stopping by Merdeka Walk, a bustling food street where you can sample local delicacies, and Tip Top Restaurant, an iconic eatery known for its colonial-era charm and delicious pastries.
2. Maimun Palace (Istana Maimun):
Maimun Palace is an iconic landmark in Medan, renowned for its unique blend of Malay, Mogul, and Italian architectural styles. Built in 1888 by the Sultan of Deli, the palace is now a museum open to the public. Explore the grand halls and learn about the history of the Deli Sultanate. The palace is about a 15-minute drive from the city center.
3. Medan Grand Mosque (Masjid Raya Al-Mashun):
Adjacent to Maimun Palace, the Medan Grand Mosque is another architectural marvel worth visiting. Completed in 1909, this mosque features a stunning combination of Middle Eastern, Indian, and Spanish design elements. Visitors can admire the intricate details of the mosque’s interior and exterior. It is a 15-minute drive from the city center.
4. Rahmat International Wildlife Museum & Gallery:
A fascinating museum featuring a vast collection of preserved animals from around the world, including rare and endangered species. The exhibits are well-curated and educational, making it a great spot for families and wildlife enthusiasts. The museum is located about 20 minutes from the city center.
5. Delipark Mall:
For some modern-day shopping and entertainment, visit Delipark Mall at Podomoro City Deli, one of Medan’s largest shopping centers. The mall features a variety of international and local brands, a food court, and entertainment options such as a cinema and an arcade. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon shopping and dining.
6. Local Coffee Shops:
Medan is known for its robust coffee culture. Visit one of the many local coffee shops, such as Macehat or Alligator, to enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Sumatran coffee. These cafes often provide a cozy atmosphere to relax and watch the world go by.
7. Tjong Yong Hian Gallery:
This gallery is dedicated to Tjong Yong Hian, a prominent figure in Medan’s history, and showcases the contributions of the Chinese community to the development of the city. It’s a great place to learn more about Medan’s cultural heritage.
8. Traditional Markets:
Experience the hustle and bustle of Medan’s traditional markets such as Pasar Beruang and Pasar Rame. These markets offer a wide variety of goods, from fresh produce and spices to textiles and souvenirs. It’s a perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culture and perhaps pick up a unique memento of your trip.
Outside of Medan:
1. Lake Toba:
Just a short trip from Medan, Lake Toba is the world’s largest volcanic lake, offering breathtaking views and a wealth of cultural experiences. This stunning natural wonder, formed by a massive supervolcanic eruption thousands of years ago, is perfect for those looking to escape the city and connect with nature. The drive from Medan takes approximately 4-5 hours. Along the way, make a stop in Siantar, a great halfway point to stretch your legs and visit the Siantar Zoo or try the local specialty, Roti Ganda. Just before reaching Lake Toba, detour to see the majestic 120-meter Sipiso-Piso Waterfall, with stunning views of the lake.
For adventure enthusiasts, Bukit Lawang is a must-visit destination, located approximately 3-4 hours by car from Medan. Embark on an exhilarating jungle trek through the lush rainforests of Gunung Leuser National Park to see the critically endangered orangutans in their natural habitat. This unique experience allows you to get up close with these gentle primates and learn about conservation efforts to protect them. En route to Bukit Lawang, stop in Binjai, a small town perfect for a quick snack and to explore the local market. Consider a brief riverside picnic or a refreshing swim at the Wampu River. Recommend coming a day or two early if you plan on checking out Bukit Lawang.
3. Berastagi:
Nestled in the highlands, Berastagi is a charming town known for its cool climate, vibrant markets, and picturesque landscapes. It’s approximately a 2-3 hour drive from Medan. Visit the bustling fruit and flower markets to sample local produce and buy souvenirs. Hike up Mount Sibayak or Mount Sinabung, two active volcanoes that offer stunning sunrise views and the chance to see geothermal activity up close. Don’t miss the traditional Karo Batak villages, where you can learn about the unique culture and customs of the local people. On your way, stop by the Sibolangit Nature Reserve for a short hike and to see exotic plants, and once in Berastagi, drive up to Gundaling Hill for panoramic views of the surrounding volcanoes and the town below.
